Who needs to complete a Rail Medical Assessment?
All contractors and employees working in the rail corridor or near rail infrastructure are required to pass a health assessment. This ensures they are medically fit to safely perform their duties in accordance with National Standard requirements.
What are the different Rail Medical Categories?
There are three categories:
Category 1: Safety-critical workers (e.g. train drivers)
Category 2: Non–safety-critical workers operating around rail
Category 3: Around-the-track workers with no safety-critical responsibilities
The category depends on your role and is usually determined by your employer or rail operator.
Who can perform a Rail Medical Assessment?
Only an Authorised Health Professional (AHP) can perform these assessments. At Genesis Health Precinct, our doctors and allied health team are fully accredited to carry out RIW-compliant rail medicals.
How long does the assessment take?
The duration varies by category:
Category 1: Up to 90 minutes
Category 2 & 3: 30–60 minutes

Do You offer same-day or urgent appointments?
Yes, although we are a busy practice, we will trial to accommodate same-day and next-day bookings, subject to availability. Call us directly to check for urgent appointment times.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Please bring:
Your RIW card
- Request and Report form (please send to admin@genesishealth.au for processing)
100 points of ID – including Photo ID (e.g. driver’s licence)
Glasses or hearing aids if required for work
Any blood work or other relevant investigations
Any relevant medical history or specialist letters
Where can I get a request form from?
Please download a requested and report form and ask your employer/manger to complete the form. Once completed please e-mail the form to admin@genesishealth.au. You can download the form from Category 1 2 3 Request and Report Form 2024.pdf
Can I get my RIW card after the medical?
Once you pass your medical, results are uploaded to the Rail Industry Worker (RIW) system. You can then complete any other required steps for card activation via your employer or RIW provider.
How Often do I need a Rail Medical ?
The frequency depends on your category and age. Please note, rail medicals may be required more frequently in some circumstances, please refer to the national guidelines for further details.
Category 1: Every 5 years (ages 40–49), more frequently for 50+
Category 2 & 3: Typically every 5 years
